Cannabis Sample Preparation

Hi, I’m Eric Smith the Application Scientist at Spex in New Jersey. This is the 2010 Geno/Grinder. Spex high-throughput homogenizer. Fully programmable with touch screen interface. Designed to be high demand from day-to-day use.

For applications extracting pesticide residues, one to three grams of cannabis flower is added to a 50 mm centrifuge tube with two ceramic cylinder, 15 mL of acetonitrile and a magnesium sulfate mixture to remove any water content. After the samples have been prepared, they are loaded into the Geno/Grinder. The Geno/Grinder clamp can accommodate 16 sample tubes. The clamp lid is lowered and locked into place. Now, close the lid. Typical run time is 3 minutes at the rate of 1,500 rpm. After the run time is complete, the sample tubes are removed and centrifuged. The solvent layer is extracted for analysis.

For sample preparation that requires DNA extraction, the new DNAmax kit can be used in combination with the PCRmax Thermal Cycler to obtain high purity DNA.

The Freezer/Mill uses liquid nitrogen to embrittle the sample, while crushing it into a powder. The 6875D is fully programmable with a touch screen interface. The sample vials are loaded into the grinding chamber. Typical run time is 7 to 10 minutes. And this concludes our demonstration on how the Spex equipment can improve your laboratory workflow. Thanks for watching.

Abstract

Learn how the Spex Geno/Grinder® and Freezer/Mill® are utilized for cannabis sample preparation.

The Geno/Grinder® is an automated high-throughput plant & animal tissue homogenizer and cell lyser.

The Freezer/Mill® is a high-throughput, dual chamber, cryogenic grinder.
